Catalogue Note

K.G. Subramanyan is renowned as an art historian, scholar, prolific writer, teacher, sculptor, and distinguished painter, and his artwork explores the panoply of Indian mythology and folklore, including Hindu narratives. Hailing from a territory that is now part of Kerala, Subramanyan revealed an early affinity to Marxist ideals popular in the state, which continued to permeate his work as he focused on the lives and tales of common people. After early studies in Madras, Subramanyan gained admission to the Visva-Bharati School at Santiniketan, where he learned from master artists Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee, and Ramkinker Baij, who each encouraged collaboration between fine arts and craftsmanship through collective work. Subramanyan absorbed these lessons and translated them into his teaching and practice at the new M.S. University of Baroda in the 1950s. His work bridges the ideals of modernism, seen in the simplified and symbolic forms in this work, with vernacular culture, as this work is dominated by a large Ganesha.
