Catalogue Note
John Craxton arrived in Greece in May 1946, hitching a ride in a borrowed bomber with the wife of the British ambassador. It was love (of people, light, landscape, history, mythology) at first sight and he was to be hooked forever. Settling on the island of Poros, Craxton produced his first landscape painting Hotel by the Sea (Tate, London) and Yellow House followed very soon afterwards. Here he is working through the influences of Picasso and Miro to create his own visual language, with an exquisite vocabulary further enriched by a passion for Byzantine mosaics.
