Catalogue Note
Winner's subject has her eyes averted from us: it is a ruse; a game of gaze. Yet, despite her mysterious beauty, her sunken eyes, laden with an intense emotion, betrays her deep-felt sorrow within. The psychological turmoil is emphasized by her wet, disheveled hair and sweeping brushstrokes. Framing her face is a cluster of cloth-like material displaying fragments of her friends, strangers or perhaps, her own memory. Why is she hidden amongst this complex network of imagery? It becomes our role to finish the puzzle map that she is presenting to us.
