Catalogue Note

"His way of working is linked to the methods of both the impressionists and the expressionists. to paint in the open air, directly on the canvas, had been an invention of the impressionists. To focus on the soul or inner experience instead of stressing the outer appearance of a subject, had been the innovation of the expressionists. Affandi combined these two traditions of modern art, adding his own vision and technique. He preferred to paint on the spot, in the open air."
