Specializing in lacquer painting, Nguyen Duc Nung has been credited for modernizing Vietnamese lacquer art towards Western realism; his works are currently preserved in the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum. Graduating from Ecole des Beaux Arts de Hanoi in 1938, Nguyen Duc Nung has certainly become well acquainted with a variety of mediums, including lacquer, ink, and silk. The subject matter illustrates three young ladies in traditional summer wear, lounging on a bamboo bench safely shaded in the veranda. Using softer tones, the sunlight falls gently onto the three figures and the surrounding greenery, creating a comfortable Sunday afternoon ambience. With their backs turned towards the audience, the artist invites the viewer to join them on this delightful hour of relaxation.
