Applique en bronze doré à trois lumières, travail romain ou milanais de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, d'après un dessin de Giocondo Albertolli

The catalogue illustration is accurate but it does not show the drip pans for each arm. The catalogue said that they were missing but in reality they are sold with the applique. Good overall condition. The central arm of light has been broken and is now restored with a minor loss to the gilding. The arms are slightly wobbly, they have to be refixed properly. The gilding is slightly tarnished throughout.

Cette applique est directement inspirée du dessin de Giocondo Albertolli, reproduit ci-dessous, qui a servi de modèle à la série probablement réalisée par la fonderie Manfredini à Milan et aujourd'hui conservée dans la chapelle de la Villa Melzi à Côme. L'influence du célèbre bronzier romain Luigi Valadier est nettement perceptible dans le travail d'Albertolli, ce qui a été démontré par Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios par la publication d'un dessin de Valadier sur lequel on peut observer les mêmes caractéristiques à la naissance des bras de lumière. 

Giocondo Albertolli (1742-1839) est un ornemaniste milanais qui a largement contribué à la diffusion du renouveau classique à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Il a notamment participé à la décoration du Palazzo Reale à Milan et du Palazzo Pitti à Florence. Ses recueils de gravures ont également influencé des ébénistes comme Maggiolini et Maffezzoli. 

Nous pouvons rapprocher cette applique d'un exemplaire similaire vendu chez Sotheby's lors de la vente de l'ancienne collection de Madame Anténor Patiño à Paris, le 23 septembre 2010, lot 255 (125 000 €).
