Catalogue Note
“Our lives are like big carpets; we walk over them again and again many times until they are worn out and we die. Our lives are like paintings; we think we make something different every time, but in the end it is all part of the same story that goes on and on. When the story ends, the painting ends, and again we die. The delusion or the illusion that we can change carpets, paintings, life as much as we want allows us to keep going. We think we move ahead, but in fact we move in circles. Same carpet. Same story. Same paintings. That is the only way we feel safe… Painting is not a matter of jumping from one place to another, but a matter of walking. A carpet is a painting, and a painting is a carpet. It is only our position in relation to them that changes." Francesco Bonami (Exh. Cat., Gagosian Gallery, New York, Rudolf Stingel, 2011, p. 7)
