Condition

Generally good. The top with some old marks. The brass with tarnishing from cleaning and some losses to mouldings. The ovoid form with splits and losses to some timber.

Catalogue Note

The firm of William Bertram & Son were established in 1830 and trading on Dean Street from 1839. See C. Gilbert, ed., Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.18.

Generally thought of as both retailers and cabinet makers, they specialised in brass-inlaid and marquetry furniture and retailed French 18th century style furniture by makers such as Mellier.
