Catalogue Note
'I remember how earnestly Goncharova discussed every detail of the forthcoming production, how quiet, sincere and concentrated she was in all she said...Goncharova not only produced marvellous scenery and costume designs, but displayed an unbelievably fantastic devotion to her work for Le Coq d’Or. It was very moving to see how, together with Larionov, she painted the entire assortment of properties by hand. Every object on the stage was a work of art … This was the beginning of our collaboration, which was resumed just as happily almost a quarter of a century later.’
Mikhail Fokine on Goncharova and the 1914 production of Le Coq d’Or. (Protiv techeniya [Against the Stream], 1962)
