Catalogue Note

These chairs with their Grecian-scrolled back legs and palm ornament are similar to a set of mahogany chairs from Lansdowne House, London, which feature caned backs and seats.  The Lansdowne set were almost certainly commissioned by Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne from Gillows & Company and were sold Christie's, London, 5 April 2001, lot 306.
