Condition

The panel is sound. There is vertical crack approx. 20cm. long running upper lower left edge. A faint horiztonal surface abrasion upper left of boy's head; otherwise the work appears in good overall condition with a rich textured surface. May benefit from a light clean. UV light reveals small areas or retouching to the centre of the boy's chest, neck, right of his mouth and a spot above his left shoulder. Held in a gilt plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

Robin (born 23 October 1904) was the son of Augustus John and Ida Nettleship, John's first wife. John often used his family as models and a comparable work of Robin, depicted with the same long tousled hair and dated circa 1912, belongs in the Tate Collection, London.
