Catalogue Note

In 1921 Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappelin Venini & Co. opened on the island of Murano. Within a few years Venini quickly asserted prowess as a leader in cutting edge design and technique.

The architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) became the artistic director in 1934 and remained with the firm until 1947. He had a fascination with the East, particularly Japan and the materials from that country, as well as the history and culture of Venice. Murano glass lending itself well to reflecting these passions in his work. He introduced innovative decorative methods that helped distinguish the Venini firm as one of the finest producers of Murano glass and the offered lot demonstrates this superbly.

In 1930 Venini produced their 'Catalogi Blu' which included all their current designs. We see on plate 153, model number 502 which is almost identical to the offered lot. This plate is reproduced by Anna Venini Diaz de Santillana, Venini Catalogue Raisonné, 1921-1980, Milan, 2000, p.258.
