Original canvas. There are two repair patches on the reverse of the work, near the centre of the canvas. There is a stretcher bar mark along the upper edge, some small spots of paint loss along lower left edge and a surface abrasion below the head of the left-hand puppy. Also a small puncture to the rear of the right-hand puppy. Ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish. There are some spots retouching to the ear of the central dog and left of its nose. Also some retouching by the right eye of the right-hand puppy. A few other small spots elsewhere. Held in a wood frame.
