The tortoiseshell rectangular case inset with a charming miniature voyeur of Venus and Cupid, reminiscent of the Velasquez painting Venus at her Mirror, French maker’s mark, probably Paris, measuring approximately 90 x 58 x 25mm; the rectangular box with 18th century enamel panels, probably Austrian, painted with Flemish peasant subjects, in the manner of Teniers, gold lines, some restoration to enamel, maker's mark and French post 1838 control marks, measuring approximately 83 x 61 x 20mm, fitted case.
Condition
Tortoiseshell box: maker's mark possibly JD below a heart in a vertical lozenge, 1819-1838. Tortoiseshell in good condition, few scratches, one small area to the back where material testing may have been done. Miniature in good condition.
Rectangular box: Maker's marks for Adolphe Chadouteau, French post-1838 control marks. Some hairlines, minor areas of loss and restoration, mainly on inner image and the one below the box , otherwise good condition.
Normal signs of use to the metal. In good condition. Gross weight of tortoiseshell box approximately 84, of other box approximately 164 grams.
