Set with rose diamonds in closed back settings, size 52, original inventory number to reverse.

Provenance

Maximilian I (b.1832-1867) renounced his title as Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, Commander in Chief of the Austrian Navy, in 1863 to gain the title of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, a position put forward by Mexican Monarchists and Napoleon III. Captured by Mexican Republicans in 1867 he was sentenced to death, a moment depicted by Edouard Manet in his painting 'The execution of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico'.

Condition

Mounted in silver and gold. Engraved "No 18 -4 9/32 K" and "11. St - 3 5 8", numbered 198 on shank. Central diamond measures approximately 12.45 x 11.70 mm in closed collet-setting, depth not measurable due to mounting, colour grading not possible to do due to closed back setting, in our experts' opinion the diamond is of I clarity. Smaller rose diamonds bright and lively. Signs of normal wear to the metal, scratches consistent with use. Well preserved and in good condition.
