Catalogue Note

Two on a Tower, which first appeared in serial form in the Atlantic Monthly (Boston), met with mixed reviews on its publication in England. Hardy wrote to Edmund Gosse that he received "the most extraordinary criticisms" of the novel: "Eminent critics tell me in private that it is the most original thing I have done ... [w]hile other eminent critics (I wonder if they are the same) print the most cutting rebukes you can conceive" (Letters, vol. 1, p.110).
