Catalogue Note

A handsome copy of the rare first edition of Haggard's "hotchpotch of manners, morals, autobiographical ruminations, and excursions into the grotesque" (Oxford DNB). Haggard's hero is forced to escape from Britain, whereupon the novel "takes on a brilliance not evident elsewhere. Now writing from the heart, Haggard found his true milieu, and readers were enthralled by this new adventure story set in a strange, uncharted, mesmerizing part of the world..." (op.cit.)
