8vo (184 x 121mm.), 3 volumes, first edition, advertisement leaves at the beginning of each volume, original olive-green bead-grain cloth, covers decorated in black, spines lettered in gilt, black endpapers, minor tears to margin of endpaper of volume 1, slight discoloration to edges of versos of endpapers, a touch of browning to text leaves, spines very slightly darkened, minor wear at head and base of spines, a few gatherings very slightly out of shape, still a fine copy

Catalogue Note
A near fine copy of the author's rare first novel, a vivid depiction of lower-class London life "as seen by a young déclassé idealist divided between social and artistic commitments" (Pierre Coustillas, Oxford DNB). Spurned by publishers, Gissing published the novel at his own expense, using a small legacy from a great-aunt, Emily Waller Williams.
