Catalogue Note
It was with Demos that Gissing began his relationship with the publishers Smith, Elder & Co., and established his reputation as a novelist and chronicleer of the life of the working classes. In the Year of the Jubilee is a quasi-Hogarthian depiction of the new developments in suburban life. Algernon Fred Gissing (1860 – 1937) was George's younger brother, and the author of 25 novels, two collections of short stories and several pieces of travel writing.
