Catalogue Note
A rare copy in boards of what is probably the first English edition of the author's second novel and the first historical romance about the American Revolution. The Spy, which was published by Wiley and Halsted in New York in 1821, was the first major American novel to garner wide and long-lasting acclaim, and was highly influential on the subsequent development of American fiction during the rest of the nineteenth century.
