Catalogue Note
The second folio of Shakespeare’s works, the most important collection of texts in English literature, and containing the first appearance in print of John Milton. The present copy is a remarkably tall copy.
The second folio was, essentially, a page-for-page reprint of the first folio of 1623. It was printed by Thomas Cotes in 1632 who had taken over the Isaac Jaggard shop following the printer’s death in 1627. As with the first folio it was printed for a syndicate of publishers.
The title-page included here is Greg’s first variant imprint (“to be sold at the signe | of the Blacke Beare in Pauls Church-yard. 1632.”) The ‘Effigies’ leaf ([pi]A5) is present in the third setting.
As noted by M.W. Black and M.A. Shaaber in Shakespeare’s Seventeenth-Century Editors, 1937 (and quoted by Greg): ‘though many errors were introduced in the course of reprinting, the text of the present edition shows signs of careful, if unauthoritative, revision’
