8vo (223 x 137mm.), 20 volumes, first edition, with the portrait of Balzac and rare engraved frontispiece bound in volume 1, 152 engraved plates by Daumier, Nanteuil, Monnier, Johannot, Gavarni and others, with the notice by George Sand, publisher's advertisement and prospectus loosely inserted in volume 1, publisher's printed paper wrappers with engraved vignettes, library stamp on lower wrapper of some volumes, occasional slight spotting, some slight dampstaining at end of volume 1, tear to hinge of volume 1, some small tears to wrappers at hinges and edges in other volumes

Catalogue Note
First edition of Balzac's monumental work, illustrated by some of the foremost illustrators of the day.
The 17-volume Furne edition (completed in 1855 by the three Houssiaux volumes) was the first collective edition of Balzac's works and the first to be published under the title Comédie humaine. It includes first editions of nine of the texts and definitive editions of each one, incorporating Balzac's final corrections and alterations.
