Catalogue Note

A fine first edition of the "first English novel" with all four volumes in their first state. The first two volumes of Pamela were intended to be a complete story. However, the novel was an instant and unexpected commercial success, going through five editions in its first year, and prompted so many imitators, counterfeit sequels and parodies that Richardson himself added two more volumes. Volumes I-II were in fact published in 1740 and volumes III-IV in 1741.
