Catalogue Note

Fairfax L. Cartwright was a prominent British diplomat who served as Ambassador to Austria-Hungary in the years leading up to the First World War. Olga Zanelli, his only novel is a satire of Berlin high society in the 1880s; according to Wolff, who described the novel as entertaining and indiscreet, it was suppressed because the "unappetising originals of his characters apparently recognised themselves."
