Catalogue Note
This piece descended in the Greenebaum family. Originally from the Eppelsheim, Germany, they arrived in Chicago in the mid-19th century where they achieved early prominence; another group was involved in the California gold rush. The Hebrew inscription on the knop reads: 'Spices for Havdalah', with initials HG, possibly for Henry Greenebaum (1833-1914); the German inscription on the base reads: 'Alfred Greenebaum. v. s. Eltern. 20. 6. 84.' For a full discussion of the family, see the Encyclopedia Judaica, v. 7, p. 910.
