Catalogue Note
Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784-1885) was one of the most prominent Jews in 19th century Britain. Born in Livorno, Italy, he emigrated to London and married Judith Cohen, whose sister Hannah married Nathan Rothschild. The two gentlemen were in business together, but Montefiore retired in 1824, aged 40, to focus on philanthropy. He was elected Sheriff of London in 1836 and was knighted by Queen Victoria the following year. He traveled extensively to alleviate the plight of Jews, particularly in Russia and the near East, and he visited the Holy Land seven times, lastly aged 91. His legacy lives on in Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, Montefiore windmill in Jerusalem, and several synagogues bearing his name.
