Condition

The upper edge of the work is stained and there are losses along the edges of the work, primarily along the right edge. There are two spots of paint loss and flaking in the center of the yellow section of the work, just above the border with the blue. There is a large rectangular rubbed area with a 30 cm vertical scratch running through it in the lower half of the painting. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching in several areas of the canvas, with one area corresponding to a patch on the reverse of the canvas. The reverse of the canvas shows water stains.

Catalogue Note

In Gross' works from the 1970s and 80s, the areas of applied color were juxtaposed with exposed canvas, planks and beams, adding a layer of tension to the work beyond the simpler means of color, lines and form. Space and Boards, offered here, is a beautiful example of the sublime intensity Gross succeeded in achieving  with endless expanses of broad abstract areas of color, clean lines, a three dimensional rough beam positioned at the border of the format and a transcendent light throughout.
