Catalogue Note

The present lot was awarded the "Sotheby's Under the Hammer" prize at the Fresh Paint 6 Contemporary Art Fair in Tel Aviv.

Liat Elbling creates challenging architectural spaces, manipulating the basic elements of fine art - perspective, dimension, texture, color, light and shade - to illustrate a minimalist interior that becomes an abstract reflection of a realistic space. Her work examines photography not just as medium, but as subject. The blatant digital manipulation of her theme, in this case, an architectural space stripped of almost every individualizing element and illustrated through the prism of bold color, exposes the viewer to the process as subject matter. The photograph becomes an object that reflects on the very nature of contemporary photography.

Elbling graduated from the photography department at the Minshar School of Art in Tel Aviv and was awarded the prestigious Leon Constantiner Award for photography from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2011.
