Catalogue Note

Born in Israel in 1967, Ohad Meromi lives and works in New York. He studied Art at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and then at Columbia University, New York for his MFA. His one-person exhibitions include those at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (together with Avner Ben Gal in 1995) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1999) as well as numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and fairs in Israel and internationally. In his practice Meromi explores the architectural aspects of installations, viewing them as a platform for his protagonists. The Psychedelic Protagonist is a wanderer with a lute on his back, a musician who is not performing but travelling, deflated, bent over and tired. He is neither young nor old. His instrument weighs him down and he stumbles upon a mushroom in his path, possibly hallucinogenic. Reminiscent of the artist’s renowned Boy from South Tel Aviv (in the collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem), this sculpture recalls iconic Israeli sculptures such as Danziger’s Nimrod and Yehiel Shemi’s Man in Arava but as opposed to these classic idols,  Meromi’s contemporary protagonist is the anti-hero.

The concrete version of this work is on long term loan to the Ashdod Museum of Art.

We would like to thank Gordon Gallery, Tel Aviv for their assistance in cataloguing this work.
