Condition

This painting is in respectable condition. The canvas has an approximately 50-year-old European glue lining which is nicely stabilizing the paint layer. Under UV light, in some of the darkest colors around the fruit, there are a few retouches, presumably to address slight abrasion. Although the varnish is somewhat opaque when viewed under UV light, there are no other retouches visible. The work will respond well to cleaning. It is possible that once the work is cleaned a few tiny dots of retouching will be required in a few areas around the peaches. The above condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
