Catalogue Note

Inspired by Wagner's last completed opera Parsifal, Toorop may have seen a performance in a French translation in Brussels and executed the drawing thereafter. The chalice with a rose and cross may refer to the Belgian art movement, the Rose + Croix, in addition to being the central symbol of Parsifal, the Holy Grail.
