Catalogue Note

Miriam and Philip Vineberg of Montreal, Canada, shared many interests – law, economics, archeology, travel and particularly art.

They both started their lifelong appreciation of art in 1935. Philip was studying for his Master’s degree in Paris and frequently visited the leading museums and galleries. Miriam accompanied her parents on an art appreciation trip to Europe. They formed the basis of their collections through paintings from leading Paris galleries in the 1960’s and 1970’s.  They acquired their collection of Rodin and Bourdelle sculptures from their good friend, Dr. Max Stern, the renowned Canadian art dealer.

They both loved academia. Miriam graduated with two university degrees by age 20 and Philip, who was a professor of both economics and law at McGill University, was often regarded as the leading Canadian lawyer of his generation.

Sotheby’s is honored to be offering works from the Vineberg Family Collection in a series of sales this fall.
