Condition

This painting has been recently restored. The canvas is unlined but the tacking edges have been reinforced. The painting is probably clean and varnished. The varnish is very fluorescent when viewed under ultraviolet light. However, across the top in the sky, there is almost an inch running from left to right of what appears to be complete repainting, which is obviously extremely exaggerated. What exactly is the cause for this retouching is unknown. To me, it is conceivable that the painting perhaps may have been extended here, either by the artist or by a later hand. Although the stretcher is old, it possibly may not be original. The remainder of the picture seems to be in very healthy state although it is difficult to identify any retouches under ultraviolet light.
