Catalogue Note
This painting was originally in the collection of Ernest May, a French banker and early collector of Impressionist paintings. He is one of the central figures portrayed in Degas’s Portraits at the Stock Exchange (Musée d’Orsay, Paris). By 1879, May’s impressive collection included works by Corot, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley and Degas, many of which were donated to the Louvre in 1923.
