Condition

The sheet has buckling throughout. There are bits of gold leaf transferred from a frame at the lower right corner, upper right edge and lower left edge. Across the lower section of the work there is a good deal of cracklure and pigment loss in the orange-red lines. In addition a small shiny area, located 5 inches up and 5 inches in from the lower right corner – this may have been an attempt to set down some disturbed pigment. Other than the orange-red, the pigments are strong, vibrant and not abraded. On the verso a number of soft folds and creases are visible. The above report was prepared by Alan Firkser of Paper Conservation Inc., an independent conservator who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
