Condition

The canvas is lined. There is a thick varnish through which the UV light cannot fully penetrate, but UV examination does reveal some retouching in places, the most prominent of which are an area to the pink ground in the centre of the composition, some scattered flecks to the centre of the lower edge, an area to the lower part of the extreme right edge, and a thin line across the breast-feeding woman's neck. There are some fine lines of craquelure, mainly to the man's clothing, and some tiny paint losses to the extreme upper edge. There is a small old repair to the centre of the upper edge. Otherwise, this work is in overall fairly good condition. Colours: overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the green cloak is slightly more emerald in the original.

Catalogue Note

In 1893 Bernard went to Constantinople and Cairo with his friend and fellow artist Charles Laval. He remained in Egypt until 1904, this experience of the Orient profoundly affecting his work. Apart from the new subjects inspired by life in Egypt, his palette became richer and darker in tone.
