Condition
Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down, attached to the mount at the upper two corners and floating in the overmount. The upper left and lower extreme edges are deckled, there are a few artist's pinholes to each of the four corners and a few to the centre of each edge. The sheet is very slightly undulating in places. There are minute paper losses to the lower left and upper right corners and there is a tiny spot of discolouration to the centre of the extreme upper edge. There are some tape and glue remnants to the edges of the verso due to previous mounting. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note
Dalí was greatly influenced by old master painters and the present work pays homage to both Francisco Goya and Diego Velázquez. The title Le Roi Soleil (The Sun King), refers jointly to the French King Louis XIV and to Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture, who devoured his children for fear of being overthrown by them. Goya famously depicted the gruesome myth as part of his Black Paintings series. The child in the body of Dalí's Le Roi Soleil, bears close resemblance to the Infanta Margarita as portrayed by Velázquez in his masterpiece Las Meninas.
