The lower left and right edges are slightly unevenly cut and the upper edge is slightly unevenly torn with some associated tiny nicks. There are diagonal creases to the two lower corners and a 1cm long vertical repaired tear to the centre of the lower edge. There are some light handling marks to the extreme edges. Otherwise this work is in overall very good condition. Colours: fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the lines are slightly more grey than black in the original.

Catalogue Note

The present work is a rare and important study for Munch's famous and moving Death in the Sickroom. Munch painted two large oil paintings of the subject: one is held in the collection of the National Gallery, Oslo, and the other is in the Munch Museum, Oslo, which also has a pastel version, and a number of other studies and sketches.

Death in the Sickroom portrays the sad story of Munch's sister Sophie's death. 'In a sparsely furnished scene the foreground is dominated by a tighly knit group consisting of the artist and his sisters Inger and Laura. Laura is sitting in profile, while Inger stands behind her, represented head on, [as seen in the present study] and behind her stand Edvard, the direction of his gaze connecting thisgroup with what is happening in the chair facing away from us in the background. As fundamentally smaller figures we see Munch's brother Andreas on the left and on the right his father and aunt on either side of the chair where the dying Sophie sits, hidden from our view' (Arne Eggum, Edvard Munch, The Frieze of Life from Painting to Grafic Art/Love-Angst-Death, Paris, 2000, p. 269).
