Condition

The canvas has been relined. There are some localised fine lines of craquelure, visible primarily in the architecture in the upper right quadrant. Ultraviolet light reveals some very minor scattered spots of retouching, notably a circa 1.5cm thin line of restoration at the bottom of the drain pipe, a very thin stroke above the lady's head, and a few spots in the sky. The painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame with a nameplate. The colours in the original are richer than in the catalogue illustration, with more yellow in the walls of the buildings.

Catalogue Note

Named for the patron saint of wine-makers, the rue Saint-Vincent on the butte of Montmartre is the location of the Clos Montmartre, the area's only remaining vineyard, in an area where they were once widespread.
