Literature

Robert & Manuel Schmit, Stanislas Lépine, 1835-1892: Catalogue Raisonné de l'œuvre peint, Paris, 1993, no. 437 (with incorrect dimensions 35.6 by 72.4cm), illustrated p. 178

Condition

The canvas has been relined. As visible in the catalogue illustration, there are scattered fine lines of craquelure, visible primarily in the sky. Ultraviolet light reveals quite extensive clusters of small spots and fine lines of retouching in the sky, and some areas of old varnish (primarily over the land and tree) which fluoresce green quite opaquely and obscure a clear reading of the surface, although there does not appear to be any notable retouching in this area. The overall appearance of the work is good and it is ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame, with a cloth inner liner and a nameplate. The colours are somewhat subtler and less saturated than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

The present work is one of a series by Lépine depicting the point in south-eastern Paris where the Marne flows into the Seine. Rising on the Langres plateau in the Champagne-Ardennes region, the verdant, tree-lined landscapes of the Marne were also painted by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne.
