Condition

Executed on cream laid paper, not laid down. The sheet is time-stained and there are some small nicks and paper losses to all four extreme edges. There is some minor scattered foxing in places. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition. Colours: overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the papertone is slightly less pink in the original.

Catalogue Note

Lorenzo Pagans, a celebrated Spanish singer at the time, was a regular guest and performer at Degas' father's musical evenings. The present work drawn circa 1874, relates to a pastel version of a portrait of Pagans which Degas executed around the same time, now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
