Private Collection, London (a gift from the artist in 1966)

Condition

Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down, attached to the mount at the right upper-edge and at the centre of the left edge. The sheet is slightly time-stained, and there are a few nicks and tears to the edges (not visible when framed), the most prominent of which are two 5 and 6cm. long vertical tears to the centre-lower edge. There is an artist's pinhole to the centre of the left and right edges, two small holes and a small 1cm. long tear to the lower left corner of the image. There are some scattered creases in places and some minor foxing to the blank margins. There are some extremely fine lines of craquelure to some of the thicker black pigments. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition and most of the present defects could be easily improved with restoration. Colours: overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the red is slightly more orange and the paper tone is warmer in the original. The work is variously inscribed by the artist to the lower centre below the painted image: 'verso de la jaquette imprimé entièrement en rouge pour rehausser le blanc du papier et le noir de la typographie du catalogue'.
