Catalogue Note

This extraordinary watch has a rich, well documented history. First sold in 1942 by the prestigious Patek Philippe retailer, Hausmann in Rome, it is offered for sale at Sotheby’s by the original owner. A letter from Hausmann accompanies the watch and details its entries within their archives; starting in September 1942, the watch was entered a further 9 times in the decades up to the year 1996. Hausmann’s own numbering (H76312) is engraved to the underside of one of the watch’s lugs and below the Patek Philippe case number to the inside of the case back. Purchased during the war when resources were scarce, the owner soon returned the watch to Hausmann and asked them to change the case from gold to steel so that the gold case could be used to assist those in need during the hostilities. Our research shows that the movement and case of this watch were made between 1941 and 1942 indicating that the watch was, most likely, re-cased within the first two years of its life.

Production of chronograph reference 530 began in 1937, the model is highly sought after by collectors for its large size and remains one of the most coveted models manufactured by Patek Philippe. With its classic, calatrava inspired case design, the model is known to have been made in yellow gold, pink gold and steel. Examples are exceptionally rare in steel, indeed, apart from the present watch, only 7 other examples are currently known.
