Catalogue Note

Longines developed a small series of watches for the British Military for scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.

The present lot was delivered to the the Office Commanding Amadi, a city in Tamil where a large portion of the Indian defense industry and RAF and IAF squads were based, on May the 3rd 1952.

Less than 100 specimens were produced in steel with a screw back, 44mm diameter, used for astronomical navigation.

As military watches had to withstand large amounts of stress, the War Department designed a waterproof case of larger diameter than the watch movement; this allowed any violent shock, such as experienced during parachute decent, to be dissipated through the case rather than be transferred directly to the movement.
