Catalogue Note
Konchalovsky visited Italy in 1924 to attend the XIV Esposizione Internationale d'arte in Venice, where he exhibited alongside Robert Falk among others. After the exhibition he went on to Rome, the city which he adored and considered ‘his second homeland’ (V.Nikolsky, Petr Petrovich Konchalovsky, 1936, p.94). The Grotto of Egeria which he painted during this trip was widely exhibited in subsequent years. The grotto itself can be found to the south-east of Rome near the Via Appia and had attracted visiting artists for centuries (fig.1). According to legend it was here among the ruins of the villa of Herodes Atticus that the nymph Egeria met with the second king of Rome.
