Condition
The canvas has been strip-lined. There are minor frame abrasions along the edges and faint stretcher bar marks approximately 5cm from the top edge. There is craquelure in places and several small areas of paint loss, one to the white flower at the centre of the composition, one approximately 18cm above the first, and three to the flower at the very top. There is an additional area of paint loss to a leaf towards the lower left corner which is not illustrated in the auction catalogue. There are two glue stains to the lower right edge. Inspection under UV light shows some very minor scattered retouching along the edges. Held in a painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note
After graduating from the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, Gorbatov was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to travel extensively in Europe. Liberated from the artistic restrictions of post-revolutionary Russia, he perfected an inimitable style that aimed to ‘depict life not the way it is but the way it could be’ (The New Hermitage Museum, Konstantin Gorbatov, 2003). As with the present lot, the richness of his canvases draws viewers into a magical world of luminosity.
