Catalogue Note
The early 1910s were a period of profound success for Saryan; several of his works were acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and he was highly regarded by major figures including Sergei Shchukin and Pavel Muratov. At the same time his journeys to Constantinople in 1910, Egypt in 1911, and Persia in 1913 proved pivotal to his development as an artist. The East and all of its exoticism became his ‘main theme, the main source of creativity’. Saryan sought to ‘understand the East, to discover its characteristic features, so as to better substantiate my explorations in painting… I wanted to convey the realism of the East, to find convincing features in the depiction of that world’ (M.Saryan, 'On My Life and Work', Isskustvo, 1940, no.2, p.80). Saryan's trip to Persia inspired some of his very best works, such as his masterpiece Persia in the collection of the Saryan Memorial Museum in Yerevan (fig.1).
