Condition

Massive ivory figure in very good condition overall with some minor surface dirt which can be easily removed. His proper right arm is carved separately, with the small finger missing, the index repaired. His eyes inlaid with glass. A small hole to the back of his hat, maybe where something had been attached. One side of the hat carved separately. A few fine fissures visible at several places to the ivory and some dark yellow colouring to the back of the figure. Very good piece which can be recommended.

Catalogue Note

Le mouvement du corps, en léger contraposto sur la jambe gauche, une main ramenée sur le cœur, reprend à l'identique l'attitude du Saint dans la Glorification de Saint Jean de Nepomuk de la collection Reiner Winkler. L'auteur de ce groupe, Simon Tröger (1683-1768), fut au XVIIIe siècle l'un des sculpteurs sur ivoire les plus réputés en Allemagne du sud, associant souvent à l'ivoire le bois ou le verre, tel qu'ici, pour figurer les yeux. Le nom de ce prêtre catholique du XIVe siècle fait référence à Nepomuck, sa ville natale, en Bohême, dont il est devenu le saint patron. Il mourut en martyr pour s'être opposé au roi Venceslas IV de Bohême et fut canonisé par le pape Benoît XIII en 1729.
