Ce dessin préparatoire a été exécuté pour le service en argent doré du cardinal Domenico Orsini di Gravina, neveu du pape Benoît XIII, créé cardinal en 1743 et mort en 1789, aujourd'hui à la cathédrale de Muro Lucano, à la hauteur de Naples.
