Condition
Small tear to bible, general conditition excellent, marks reasonably clear: V and B of mark are clear device between the letters is harder to make out, lovely colour to the marble, maker's mark only struck twice

Catalogue Note
Saint Dominique (1170-1221), fondateur de l'Ordre des Frères Prêcheurs Dominicains est parfois représenté avec un chien à ses pieds. Cette étymologie iconographique puise son origine dans le nom latin Dominicanus (Domini Canis/ le chien du Seigneur), rappelant le rêve de sa mère au moment de la naissance du saint pensant qu'elle allait accoucher d'un chien portant une torche enflammée. La mère de Saint Dominique, Juana, fut également béatifiée.
